Biorika International specializes in the trade and export of organic macadamia and pecan nuts from South Africa mainly to Europe.
Market Info
Biorika was started in 2017 by Macit Hasim and Lourens du Plessis in buying organic macadamia and pecan nuts from local farms and exporting to the growing European market. They are the sole directors of the company and passionate about the organic production of produce.
Macit is an industrial engineer from Turkey and travels to South Africa regularly to keep a hands-on approach on the business.
Lourens is a local farmer from Nelspruit in the Lowveld area of South Africa and responsible for the agricultural side of the business. He also oversees the internal logistics on the South African side for the export of the produce.
Organic Production Macadamias
We currently oversee production of one macadamia farm outside Nelspruit in the Lowveld and act as advisers on and suppliers of products used and approved for organic production. This includes organic fertilizer and micro-biological supplements improving root development and overall tree health, foliar feed as well as fungicides and pesticides.
Once macadamias are harvested it is de-husked to separate the outer husk from the actual nut to enable the farmer to decrease moisture in drying bins with ambient air to a moisture content below 10%.
Organic Production Pecans
We are currently supplied of pecan nuts from one pecan nut farm in the Northern Cape and we act as advisers on the organic products used for fertilizers and supplements. Pecan nuts are not prone to insects and fungi and therefor the organic spraying of insecticides and pesticides are not required.
Area Overview
Macadamias
The Macadamia Farm overseen by Biorika is situated in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga where the climate is perfect to produce macadamias. The macadamia production is blooming in this area, where the combination of humidity and good rainfall makes it ideal to grow these trees.
Water for irrigation is obtained from a natural spring from the mountain and the natural habitat of the wild is respected in that no animals are hindered from roaming freely.

This farm was extremely neglected for 8 years, when the current farmer took over and turned this farm from neglected to full production. Many jobs were created and in turn ensured social upliftment in the area.
Since Biorika and the local farmer’s involvement, production has more than double from the first year after taking the farm over from the neglect it was in.
Pecan Nuts
This beautiful farm is situated along the Orange River in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape Province.
The area is known for its extreme droughts, but the Vanderkloof Water Scheme ensures sufficient distribution of water to farmers from the Vanderkloof Dam. The Vanderkloof Dam forms the second largest storage reservoir in South Africa.
This farm has a more modern setup, creating jobs for local people.
